He says, BACKWARDS DAY!
Text reads, “Written by Darnell Lamont Walker. Directed by Jeff Barker, Andrea Gerstmann. Song by Randy Rogel.”
[Gentle, upbeat music plays]
At the bottom of the Treebourhood, Zeke and Zadie sit on a picnic blanket. Zeke holds Snout. Zadie holds a teacup. Malik stands at a starting line between two orange cones.
Malik says, WELCOME TO MALIK'S OUTRAGEOUS OBSTACLE COURSE RACE. HERE'S HOW YOU PLAY.
He crosses the line and walks up to a line of cones.
Malik says, FIRST, YOU RUN AROUND THE CONES OF FIRE. DON'T TOUCH THEM OR YOU MIGHT MELT!
He weaves through the cones.
Zeke says, OH, NO!
Zadie says, NOT REAL FIRE, ZEKE, JUST PRETEND.
Zeke says, OH, DON'T WORRY, SNOUT. IT'S JUST PRETEND.
Malik says, NEXT, YOU RUN TO THE WHIRLY SWIRLY HIPPITY HOOPS.
He grabs a hoop hanging on the Treebourhood tree.
Malik says, WHEN YOU GET THERE, YOU GRAB A HOOP, AND THEN YOU GOTTA MOVE AROUND IN A CIRCLE THREE TIMES WHILE YOU SPIN THE HOOP.
He spins the hoop around his waist and spins in a circle on one foot. He hangs up the hoop and rolls like a ball to a tree stump with a rope tied around it.
Malik says, THEN YOU COME TO THE HIGHEST, TIGHTEST ROPE EVER!
Zeke asks, EVER?
Malik says, EVER.
He steps onto his tree stump tightrope.
Malik says, AND YOU HAVE TO WALK ACROSS WITHOUT…
The rope wobbles.
Malik says, WHOA!
He balances over a yellow and orange rug.
Malik says, …FALLING OFF INTO THE HOT LAVA!
He leaps off the rope onto another tree stump.
Malik says, PHEW, AND AFTER THAT IS THE MAZE OF CONFUSION. YOU HAVE TO RUN THROUGH IT WITHOUT BUMPING THE WALLS.
He runs through a maze of red and blue milk crates. Malik bumps into a crate.
[Malik grunting]
Two stacked crates wobble.
Malik says, OR THEY MAY COME CRASHING DOWN!
He steadies the crates and runs out of the maze.
Malik says, AND THEN YOU COME TO…
He stumbles toward a muddy puddle.
[Malik yelping]
Zeke cheers, MUDDY PUDDLE!
Malik says, AND YOU JUMP OVER IT.
He leaps over the puddle to a finish line.
Zeke says, I WANNA DO MALIK'S OUTRAGEOUS OBSTACLE COURSE RACE NOW!
Malik says, AW, SORRY, ZEKE, THE RACE ISN'T HAPPENING UNTIL TOMORROW.
Zeke says, TOMORROW? BUT I DON'T WANT TO WAIT 'TIL TOMORROW.
He pouts and crosses his arms.
Malik says, WE DON'T HAVE TIME TO DO IT TODAY, ZEKE, BUT IT'S ON THE SCHEDULE FOR TOMORROW.
He pulls out his phone.
Malik says, I MADE THIS HANDY SCHEDULE FOR OUR BUSY DAY. IT'LL LET US KNOW ALL THE THINGS WE NEED TO DO TOMORROW AND THE ORDER WE NEED TO DO THEM IN.
He shows Zeke his schedule.
Malik says, NUMBER ONE, EAT BREAKFAST. NUMBER TWO, TAKE A GROUP PHOTO WITH OUR FRIENDS. NUMBER THREE, DO THE OBSTACLE COURSE RACE.
He points to icons of a bowl of cereal, a camera and a cone on the numbered list.
Malik continues, NUMBER FOUR, EAT LUNCH. NUMBER FIVE, SING KARAOKE IN THE CREATION STATION. NUMBER SIX, EAT DINNER. NUMBER SEVEN, EAT DESSERT.
He points to icons of a sandwich, microphone, dinner plate, and cupcake.
Zeke says, OH, IF ALL THAT HAPPENS TOMORROW, THEN WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
Grandma Super calls, DINNER TIME!
Zadie, Zeke and Malik look above them at Grandma Super. They smile and roll like balls to the house. In the kitchen, Zeke rolls up to the table and looks at a serving stand of cupcakes with blue icing. He licks his lips and reaches for a cupcake.
Grandma Super says, UH-UH-UH, THOSE ARE FOR DESSERT.
She takes away the cupcakes.
Zeke says, AW, BUT MY TUMMY WANTS ONE NOW!
Grandma Super says, NO CAN DO, LITTLE SQUISH, DESSERT COMES AFTER DINNER, THAT'S THE ORDER.
She sets the cupcakes down on a counter. Zadie and Malik join Zeke at the table.
[Zeke sadly]
Zeke says, BUT SOMETIMES IF IT'S A SPECIAL DAY, DESSERT SHOULD COME BEFORE DINNER.
Grandma Super says, DESSERT BEFORE DINNER? THAT'S BACKWARDS, AND THAT GIVES ME AN IDEA.
[Gentle music plays]
On a new day, the sun rises over hills in the distance. In their bedroom, Zadie, Zeke and Malik lie asleep in their hammocks.
[Zadie, Zeke and Malik snoring]
The sun shines brightly through the bedroom window. Grandma Super opens the door.
Grandma Super says, GOODNIGHT, LITTLE SQUISHES.
Zadie, Zeke and Malik wake up and stare at Grandma Super.
Zadie says, GOODNIGHT?
[Zeke yawning]
Zadie asks, AREN'T WE JUST WAKING UP?
Zeke flips out of his hammock and looks outside.
He says, IT'S NOT NIGHT, IT'S DAY, SO YOU SHOULD BE SAYING "GOOD MORNING," NOT "GOODNIGHT."
Grandma Super says, BUT THIS IS NO ORDINARY DAY. IT'S… BACKWARDS DAY!
Zadie, Zeke and Malik share a look and frown.
Grandma Super says, ZEKE GAVE ME THE IDEA AT DINNER LAST NIGHT WHEN HE SAID HE WANTED DESSERT BEFORE DINNER. TODAY, WE'RE GOING TO DO EVERYTHING IN BACKWARDS ORDER. LET'S EAT!
Malik says, I GET IT!
He jumps out of bed.
Malik says, SO, TODAY, INSTEAD OF FOLLOWING OUR SCHEDULE IN THIS ORDER: ONE, EAT BREAKFAST. TWO, POSE FOR THE GROUP PHOTO WITH OUR FRIENDS. THREE, DO THE OBSTACLE COURSE RACE. FOUR, EAT LUNCH. FIVE, SING KARAOKE IN THE CREATION STATION. SIX, EAT DINNER. SEVEN, EAT DESSERT. WE'RE GOING TO REVERSE THE ORDER OF THE SCHEDULE SO IT'S BACKWARDS, LIKE THIS.
On his phone, Malik flips the schedule.
He says, SEVEN, EAT DESSERT. SIX, EAT DINNER. FIVE, SING KARAOKE IN THE CREATION STATION. FOUR, EAT LUNCH. THREE, DO THE OBSTACLE COURSE RACE. TWO, POSE FOR THE GROUP PHOTO WITH OUR FRIENDS. AND ONE, EAT BREAKFAST.
Zadie says, IF WE'RE DOING EVERYTHING BACKWARDS, I SAY WE WEAR OUR SHIRTS BACKWARDS, TOO.
She hops out of bed.
[Zadie giggling]
Zeke and Malik nod. In the kitchen, Grandma places the covered cupcake stand on the table.
Zeke says, GRANDMA, WE'RE WEARING OUR SHIRTS BACKWARDS AND WE CAME IN BACKWARDS.
Zadie, Zeke and Malik walk backward into the kitchen with their shirts on backward.
Zeke asks, DID YOU SEE, GRANDMA? DID YOU SEE?
He stands at the table with Zadie and Malik.
Grandma Super says, I SURE DID.
Zeke says, AND SINCE IT'S BACKWARDS DAY, WE GET TO EAT DESSERT BEFORE DINNER, RIGHT?
He grabs Malik’s phone and shows Grandma Super the schedule.
Zeke says, THAT'S WHAT MALIK'S BACKWARDS SCHEDULE SAYS.
Grandma Super pulls the cover off the cupcake stand. Zadie, Zeke and Malik turn their backs on the cupcakes.
Zadie says, BACKWARDS DAY RULES!
She, Zeke and Malik reach backward and they each grab a cupcake.
[Munching]
Zeke says, DELICIOUS!
He, Zadie and Malik turn around to face Grandma Super.
Zeke asks, NOW WHAT?
Grandma Super says, NOW, IT'S TIME FOR DINNER.
She puts a plate of dumplings on the table.
Grandma Super says, DUMPLINGS FOR MY DUMPLINGS.
She pinches Zeke’s cheek.
[Grandma Super chuckling]
Later, on the living room couch, Grandma Super knits with her glasses on the back of her head.
Zadie says, BEEP-BEEP!
[Giggling]
Zadie, Zeke and Malik walk backward into the room.
They turn around and Zadie asks, WHAT COMES NEXT ON OUR BACKWARDS DAY SCHEDULE, MALIK?
Malik grabs his phone and says, LET'S SEE, IT'S TIME TO DO NUMBER FIVE ON THE LIST, KARAOKE.
Zeke says, WE'RE GOING TO SING!
Malik says, WE'LL BE AT THE CREATION STATION FOR KARAOKE, GRANDMA.
Grandma Super says, OKAY, GOODBYE. OH!
She shakes her head.
She says, I MEAN, HELLO, BECAUSE IT'S BACKWARDS DAY!
[Grandma Super chuckling]
Zadie, Zeke and Malik say, HELLO!
They turn and walk backward through the room.
[Grandma Super chuckling]
Grandma Super continues knitting. Elsewhere in the Treebourhood, Zadie, Zeke and Malik walk backward across a path.
Zeke says, STEP, STEP, TURN.
The siblings stop and look over their shoulders. They walk toward a raised plank in the path.
Malik says, STEP, STEP, UP JUMP.
The siblings jump and summersault backward over the plank. They meet Mr. E jogging up the path.
Zadie, Zeke and Malik say, GOODBYE, MR. E.
Mr. E says, GOODBYE? DON'T YOU MEAN HELLO?
He jogs on the spot.
Mr. E says, AND WHY ARE YOUR SHIRTS ON BACKWARDS?
Zadie says, BECAUSE IT'S BACKWARDS DAY, MR. E. WE'RE DOING EVERYTHING BACKWARDS.
She, Zeke and Malik turn around and face Mr. E.
Mr. E says, BACKWARDS?
He stops jogging and frowns.
Mr. E says, THAT'S THE SILLIEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD.
Behind Zadie, Zeke and Malik, Elle jumps rope down the path.
Ellie says, HELLO!
Mr. E says, GOODBYE, ELLIE!
Ellie stops jumping rope and frowns.
Mr. E says, EVIDENTLY, IT'S BACKWARDS DAY, SO WE GREET EACH OTHER WITH GOODBYE AND DO EVERYTHING BACKWARDS. RIDICULOUS.
Ellie says, OOH, THAT SOUNDS FUN! I THINK I'LL JUMP ROPE BACKWARDS. HELLO. HAVE A GRAND DAY!
She jumps rope and moves backward up the path.
Mr. E says, WAIT FOR ME, ELLIE!
He turns around and jogs backward. He stumbles and falls.
[Mr. E grunting]
Malik says, MR. E!
[Crashing]
[Mr. E grunting]
Zadie, Zeke and Malik flinch.
Malik says, CAREFUL.
On the ground, Mr. E gives a thumbs up.
Zadie says, MAYBE WE SHOULD MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT SO EVERYBODY KNOWS WHEN TO SHOW UP FOR WHAT.
She runs up to a speaker on a railing and presses a button.
Zadie says, ATTENTION TREEBORHOOD. TODAY IS BACKWARDS DAY! SO, WE'LL BE DOING EVERYTHING IN BACKWARDS ORDER.
Malik says, WHICH MEANS RIGHT NOW IT'S TIME FOR KARAOKE!
He points to the microphone icon on his phone. At the Creation Station, JunJun flies over a sign. Ellie skips backward past the sign.
[Ellie giggling]
Mr. E jogs backward behind Ellie and bumps into the sign.
[Mr. E grunting]
Ellie frowns. Mr. E gives her a thumbs-up and she smiles. Inside, JunJun sings into a microphone on a stage.
[JunJun singing softly in Tagalog]
Leiko plays along on her double-neck guitar.
[Gentle guitar music plays]
In the audience with Ellie and Mr. E, Sammy and Louisa nod to the music. Zadie, Zeke and Malik walk backward up to the side of the stage. JunJun and Leiko finish their song.
[Applause]
[Cheering]
Louise cheers, WHOO-HOO!
Ellie cheers, YAY!
[Ellie laughing]
Leiko and JunJun bow. Duffy hops on stage and takes the microphone from JunJun,
Duffy says, FANTASTIC, WHO'S NEXT?
Zadie raises her paw and says, WE'D LIKE TO GO. WE'D LIKE TO SING THE ALPHABET SONG.
She, Zeke and Malik walk backward onto the stage. In the middle of the stage, they turn to face the audience. Duffy passes the microphone to Malik.
Zadie, Zeke and Malik sing, Z, Y, X, W, V, U, T…
Duffy frowns. The others in the audience frown. Louisa furrows her brow.
Zadie, Zeke and Malik sing, …S, R, Q, P, O, N, M, L, K, J, I, H, G…
Mr. E says, THEY'RE SINGING IT BACKWARDS?
Ellie shrugs.
Zadie, Zeke and Malik continue, …F, E, D, C, B, A. AND NOW YOU KNOW JUST HOW TO SAY THE A.B.C.’S THE BACKWARDS WAY.
[Applause]
[Cheering]
Ellie cheers, YAY-HOO!
[Laughing]
[Giggling]
Zadie says, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
She, Zeke and Malik bow.
Malik says, SINCE KARAOKE WAS NUMBER FIVE…
He checks the backward schedule.
Malik says, NUMBER FOUR COMES NEXT, AND THAT MEANS IT'S TIME FOR…
Duffy says, I HOPE IT'S LUNCH, 'CAUSE LOOK WHAT I HAVE!
At one of the tables, she holds up a pizza and a bowl of carrots.
Mr. E cheers, YAY!
He runs backward toward the table, trips, and falls.
[Mr. E grunting]
Mr. E shakes his head and gives a thumbs-up.
[Everyone exclaiming]
Everyone grabs a slice of pizza and a carrot.
Zadie says, WAIT.
[Record scratching]
Zadie says, TODAYS' BACKWARDS DAY. YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO!
Everyone bites into the crust of their pizza.
[Munching]
Zadie says, DELICIOUS.
Later in the day, everyone at the Creation Station relaxes. Zadie Zeke, Malik, JunJun and Mr. E lie on the floor. Louise and Ellie lean against the tables. Sammy rests his head on a table.
Zeke asks, WHAT'S NUMBER THREE ON YOUR BACKWARDS DAY SCHEDULE, MALIK?
Malik shows Zeke the schedule.
Zeke says, THE OUTRAGEOUS OBSTACLE COURSE RACE?! WOO-HOO!
Zadie says, ATTENTION, EVERYONE! GATHER AT THE BASE OF THE TREEBORHOOD FOR THE FIRST EVER BACKWARDS OUTRAGEOUS OBSTACLE COURSE RACE! LET'S ROLL!
Mr. E frowns. The others leave and he sits up.
Mr. E says, BACKWARDS OBSTACLE COURSE RACE, EH? TO AVOID FURTHER FALLS, I NEED TO FIND A WAY TO SEE BEHIND MYSELF.
He looks thoughtful. At the start of the obstacle race, Zadie, Zeke, JunJun, Leiko and Sammy stand behind the starting line.
Malik says, THIS IS THE STARTING LINE. FIRST, RUN AROUND THE CONES OF FIRE.
He weaves backward through the orange cones of fire.
Malik says, NEXT IS THE WHIRLY SWIRLY HIPPITY HOOPS.
He grabs a hoop off the Treebourhood tree and puts it around his waist.
Malik says, WHEN YOU GET THERE, YOU GRAB A HOOP AND YOU GOTTA MOVE AROUND IN A CIRCLE THREE TIMES WHILE YOU SPIN THE HOOP.
He spins the hoop around his waist and spins three times on one foot. Malik hangs up the hoop and rolls like a ball over to the first tight rope tree stump.
Malik says, THEN YOU COME TO THE HIGHEST, TIGHTEST ROPE EVER!
Zeke says, EVER!
Malik says, AND YOU HAVE TO WALK ACROSS WITHOUT –
He walks backward across the rope and it wobbles.
Malik says, WHOA…
He balances over the hot lava rug.
Malik says, …FALLING OFF INTO THE HOT LAVA!
He leaps off the rope onto the other tree stump. Malik flips off the stump and walks over to the milk crate maze of confusion.
Malik says, AND AFTER THAT IS THE MAZE OF CONFUSION.
He walks backward through the milk crate maze.
Malik says, YOU HAVE TO RUN THROUGH WITHOUT BUMPING THE WALLS!
He bumps into two stacked crates, and they wobble.
Malik says, OR THEY MAY COME CRASHING DOWN!
He steadies the crates and continues through the maze.
At the end, Malik says, AND THEN YOU JUMP OVER THE –
Zeke says, MUDDY PUDDLE!
Malik jumps backward over the muddy puddle to the finish line.
He says, FIRST ONE ACROSS THE FINISH LINE WINS.
Zadie says, OH! 'CAUSE IT'S BACKWARDS DAY, WE SHOULD START AT THE FINISH LINE, THEN WE SHOULD GO BACKWARDS UNTIL WE GET TO THE STARTING LINE!
Zeke and JunJun nod.
JunJun says, YEAH!
The racers join Malik at the finish line which is now the starting line.
Malik says, OKAY, GO…
Everyone turns their backs to the course.
Malik says, …GET SET –
[Panting]
Mr. E says, DON'T START WITHOUT ME!
He walks backward toward the finish line and stands between Zadie and Malik.
[Mr. E panting]
Zadie asks, MR. E, WHY IS THERE A MIRROR ON YOUR SHOULDER?
Mr. E wears a mirror on his left shoulder.
Mr. E says, SINCE I KEPT RUNNING INTO THINGS WHILE I WAS WALKING BACKWARDS, I PUT A MIRROR ON MY SHOULDER SO I CAN SEE WHAT'S BEHIND ME.
Zadie looks at her reflection in Mr. E’s rearview mirror.
Zadie says, SMART THINKING, MR. E!
Malik says, GO, GET SET, ON YOUR MARK!
Everyone runs backward into the course.
[Cheering]
[Laughing]
The racers run into the mud puddle.
[Splatting]
Leiko lies on milk crates covered in mud. The other racers lie on the ground, all covered in mud. Mr. E jumps to his feet.
[Mr. E laughing]
Mr. E races backward into the milk crate maze of confusion.
He cheers, ALRIGHT!
[Mr. E laughing]
Zeke quickly follows Mr. E into the maze.
[Mr. E panting]

[Zeke giggling]
Leiko hops backward through the maze with JunJun, Sammy and Malik close behind. Zadie runs up to the tightrope and jumps on.
[Zadie grunting]
The rope wobbles under Zadie’s feet.
Zadie yelps, WHOA!
She falls off the rope.
[Zadie grunting]
Zadie lies on the yellow and orange lava rug under the rope. Above her, Zeke carefully walks backward across the rope.
Near the end, Zeke yells, WHOA!
He steadies himself.
Zeke cheers, WOO-HOO!
He hops onto the tree stump at the other end.
[Zeke giggling]
Zeke rolls like a ball over to the swirly hippity hoops station and reaches for a hoop.
[Zeke grunting]
Mr. E pulls two hoops off the Treebourhood tree and passes one to Zeke. Zeke smiles. He and Mr. E spin their hoops around their waists and spin on one foot.
Mr. E counts, ONE, TWO, THREE!
He and Zeke drop their hoops and run backward toward the next station. Leiko and Sammy take their places.
Leiko says, AH!
[Sammy giggling]
[Mr. E panting]
Mr. E looks in the mirror on his shoulder.
He says, PHEW, I KNEW I COULD TRUST MY TRUSTY REARVIEW MIRROR!

[Zeke giggling]
Zeke cheers, WOO-HOO!
He and Mr. E run through a red ribbon and cross the starting line, which is the finish line.
They both cheer, YAY!
[Mr. E laughing]
Leiko and Sammy follow Zeke and Mr. E through the finish line with Zadie, Malik and JunJun close behind.
Zeke says, WE DID IT, MR. E, WE CROSSED THE FINISH LINE! I MEAN, THE STARTING LINE. WE CAME IN FIRST, FIRST, FIRST. I MEAN, LAST, LAST, LAST.
Mr. E says, THIS IS THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE!
He hugs Zeke.
Zeke asks, WHAT'S NEXT ON OUR BACKWARDS DAY SCHEDULE, MALIK?
Malik and the other racers catch up with Zeke and Mr. E. Malik checks the schedule.
He says, NUMBER TWO IS...
He points toward the camera icon on the schedule.
Through the Treebourhood speakers, Grandma Super says, IT'S TIME FOR THE GROUP PHOTO IN THE STARLIGHT ROOM!
Zeke says, PICTURE TIME! LET'S GO!
Mr. E says, BACKWARDS CONGA LINE!
[Mr. E singing conga tune]
The racers form a backward conga line. Malik walks backward with JunJun in front of him, followed by Leiko, Sammy, Zadie, Zeke and Mr. E.
In the Starlight Room, Grandma Super sets up her phone on a tripod.
[Mr. E singing]
Malik leads the conga line into the room. The line separates and everyone, still covered in mud, turns to face Grandma Super.
Zeke says, MR. E AND I WON THE OUTRAGEOUS BACKWARDS OBSTACLE COURSE RACE, GRANDMA! I LIKED THE MUD THE BEST.
Grandma Super says, I SEE, GUESS WE'LL JUST HAVE ONE MUDDY PICTURE, NOW WON'T WE? LET ME SET THE TIMER ON THIS BAD BOY.
She taps her phone and walks over to the others. A timer counts down from 10.
Zadie says, WAIT, IT'S BACKWARDS DAY! TURN AROUND, EVERYONE!
Everyone turns their backs to the phone. They look over the shoulder and the phone takes a picture.
[Camera clicking]
Malik checks his phone.
He says, NEXT UP ON OUR BACKWARDS SCHEDULE IS…
He points to the bowl of cereal icon on the schedule.
Malik says, BREAKFAST.
Zeke asks, CAN YOU MAKE BLUEBERRY PANCAKES FOR US, GRANDMA?
He wraps his muddy arms around Grandma Super.
Zeke asks, PLEASE?
Grandma Super smiles. At home, Zeke jumps up and down. Zadie and Malik sit at the kitchen table.
Zeke cheers, YAY!
Grandma Super walks backward into the kitchen with a stack of pancakes on a plate.
[Zeke giggling]
Grandma Super puts the pancakes on the table, and Zeke hugs her with his back facing her.
Grandma Super asks, WHAT'S THIS?
Zeke says, IT'S A BACKWARDS DAY HUG, 'CAUSE I LOVE YOU FRONTWARDS AND BACKWARDS.
He gives Grandma Super a hug with his front to hers.
Zadie says, HEY, MAYBE TOMORROW WE CAN DO SIDEWAYS DAY.
Malik, Zeke and Grandma Super. Zeke and Grandma Super share a look and smile.
[Zeke and Grandma Super laughing]
[Smooth, relaxing music plays]

[‘That repeats’ echoing]

[Papers rustling]
Malik says, I'VE READ EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE COMIC BOOKS!
Behind Malik, Mr. E unpacks a box of comic books.
[Papers rustling]
A row of comic books on a shelf move.
Malik says, HUH? IS THERE SOMETHING IN THERE?
The books fly off the shelf, and Carly, Clyde and CeCe jump out.
The three crab siblings shout, BOO!
Malik jumps off the stool. Cece gathers the fallen books.
Clyde asks, WANNA PLAY A GAME WE MADE UP?

Clyde asks, HOW DID YOU GUESS?
Malik says, I NOTICED YOU WERE DOING A PATTERN.
Carly says, WE WEREN'T DOING A PATTERN, IT WAS JUST A FUN GAME.
Malik says, A FUN PATTERN GAME.
Clyde asks, WHAT'S A PATTERN?

Malik says, OKAY.
Mr. E pushes the stool away and leaves. Clyde, Carly and Cece share a look and then turn to Malik.
Malik says, HM...
He looks around the store. He glances at the floor and smiles. He picks up a red and yellow striped scarf.
Malik says, THIS IS A PATTERN, SEE? RED, YELLOW, RED, YELLOW, RED, YELLOW STRIPES THAT REPEAT ALL THE WAY DOWN.
Clyde says, OH, YEAH, THAT'S A PATTERN FOR SURE, BUT HOW IS OUR GAME A PATTERN?
Malik says, WELL, THE PATTERN ON THE TOWEL IS A PATTERN YOU CAN SEE, BUT YOU DID A PATTERN WE COULD HEAR.
He points to his ear.
He says, POP-POP-POPCORN!
Clyde says, WHOA! THERE ARE PATTERNS YOU CAN HEAR?
Malik says, YES.
He grabs a pot of things from the store.
Malik says, CHECK IT OUT. CLOSE YOUR EYES AND LISTEN.

Cece says, LIKE GAMES THEY HAD AT THE FLOWERHOOD FAIR, REMEMBER? WE WON A FLOWER!
A thought bubble shows Carly and Clyde watching Cece throw a ring on a bottle. A bee awards Cece a flower. The bubble pops.
Clyde says, WE LOVE FAIRS.
Carly says, AND NOW WE LOVE PATTERNS.
Cece says, WISH WE COULD DO BOTH.
Clyde says, YOU MEAN, LIKE A PATTERN FAIR?
Malik says, A PATTERN FAIR? COUNT ME IN.
Clyde says, DID YOU HEAR THAT? MALIK'S GOING TO PUT ON A PATTERN FAIR!
Malik says, WAIT, WHAT?
Clyde says, YAY! WHAT PATTERN GAMES ARE YOU GOING TO COME UP WITH, MALIK?
Carly says, YAHOO! WHAT WILL THE GRAND PRIZE BE?
Cece says, DON'T RUIN THE SURPRISE, CARLY. WE'LL FIND OUT AFTER LUNCH AT THE PATTERN FAIR.
Malik says, AFTER LUNCH!? HOW AM I GOING TO DO THAT?
Clyde, Carly and Cece stare at Malik.
Malik says, UH, OKAY, I GUESS I'M IN. I'M GOING TO SEE IF ZADIE AND ZEKE CAN HELP WITH THE FAIR.
He quickly leaves.
Clyde says, IF WE'RE GOING TO WIN AT THE PATTERN FAIR, WE GOTTA PRACTICE WORKING OUT PATTERNS.

He dances through a doorway.
Clyde says, THE PATTERN IS BOUNCE, STEP.
Cece says, …KICK AND SCISSOR…
Carly says, HAPPY FEET.
Clyde, Cece and Carly dance through the doorway behind Mr. E. In the living room at home, Malik sits on the couch with his phone. Zeke sits at the coffee table with Scout. Zadie sits on the stairs of a climbing structure and slide.
Zadie says, A PATTERN FAIR, YES!
She honks the horn.
[Honking]
Zadie flips off the stairs.
She says, I'LL HELP, I'M THE BEST EVER AT FAIR GAMES. AT THE FLOWERHOOD FAIR I WON THE GRAND PRIZE.
In a thought bubble, Zeke and Malik watch Zadie throw bean bags into holes. Zadie snuggles a large, stuffed, horned monster. The bubble pops and Zadie pulls out the monster from behind the stairs. Grandma Super walks in.
Zadie says, HERBERT!
Grandma Super jumps back.
[Grandma Super yelping]
Grandma Super says, GOODNESS ME! HERBERT ALWAYS CATCHES ME BY SURPRISE.
A thought bubble shows Grandma Super in the kitchen. She turns around and finds Herbert, the stuffed monster, at the table.
[Grandma Super yelping]
Herbert’s head drops onto the table. In her office, Grandma Super carries a stack of papers toward her desk. The desk chair turns, revealing Herbert.
[Grandma Super yelping]
Grandma Super drops her papers, and Herbert flops onto the floor. Grandma Super frowns.
[Lullaby music plays]
Grandma Super lies asleep in bed. She opens her eyes and glances over her shoulder toward Herbert beside her.
Grandma Super yelps, YOWZA!
Herbert flops onto the bed. The bubble pops.
Zadie says, I WANT HERBERT TO BE THE GRAND PRIZE AT THE FAIR. I'LL MISS HIM, BUT THAT'S OKAY. SOMEONE ELSE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE HIM.
Grandma Super smiles.
She says, YES, SOMEONE ELSE TAKE HIM, PLEASE.
Grandma Super walks away.
Zadie says, LET'S CALL IT THE MAGNIFICENT, MARVELLOUS, AMAZING, AWESOME, BEST-EVER PATTERN FAIR!
She bounces across the room.
Zeke says, OR, HOW ABOUT PATTERNPALOOZA?
Zadie says, HM, THAT'LL WORK.
Malik says, WE CAN MAKE GAME BOOTHS OUT OF CARDBOARD. THAT'S EASY. THE HARD PART IS WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO THINK UP SOME PATTERN GAMES. THINKING POSITIONS!
Malik rolls onto his head. Zadie stands on one paw. Zeke stands on one foot with a paw raised. He spins around on his foot. Malik taps his chin thoughtfully. Zadie jumps to her feet.
Zadie says, GOT ONE. WE COULD DO A SOUND PATTERN GAME. WE COULD PLAY A PART OF A SONG, AND CARLY, CECE, AND CLYDE HAVE TO WORK OUT WHAT THE NEXT PART IS.
Malik rolls upright and grabs his phone.
He says, GREAT IDEA, ZADIE!
He draws shapes.
Malik says, AND WE COULD DO A SHAPE PATTERN GAME, BUT PART OF THE PATTERN WILL BE OUT OF ORDER, AND THEY HAVE TO FIX IT!
Zeke says, AND I'LL DO COLOURS WITH THE PATTERN OF RED AND BLUE JELLYBEANS.
He pours red and blue jelly beans out of a bag. Malik adds to his notes.
Malik says, THAT GIVES CECE, CARLY, AND CLYDE THREE PATTERN GAMES TO PLAY. SOUNDS, SHAPES, AND COLOURS. EACH TIME THEY WIN A GAME, THEY GET A PRIZE!
Zadie says, AND IF THEY GET ALL THREE PATTERN GAMES RIGHT THEY WIN THE GRAND PRIZE…
She throws Herbert in the air.
Zadie says, HERBERT!
Herbert lands on top of Zadie. Zadie crawls out from under him.
Zadie says, I'M OKAY!
Outside, Mr. E dances past square and circle stepping stones with Clyde, Cece and Carly. They dance toward a row of potted red, pink and white flowers.
Clyde says, THE PATTERN IS BOUNCE, STEP.
Cece says, KICK AND SCISSOR.
Carly says, HAPPY FEET.
Clyde spots the flowers.
He says, LOOK, A COLOUR PATTERN!
Cece says, RED, PINK, WHITE.
Cece, Clyde and Carly say, RED, PINK, WHITE.
Clyde says, RED, WHITE, PINK. THAT'S NOT RIGHT.
He swaps the pink and white flowers at the end of the row.
Clyde says, RED, PINK, WHITE.
Cece and Carly cheer, YAY!
They glance at the stepping stones.
Carly says, LOOK, A SHAPE PATTERN!
She points toward the stepping stones with her claw.
Carly says, SQUARE, SQUARE, CIRCLE. SQUARE, SQUARE, CIRCLE.
She moves down the stone path and grabs another square stone from a stack beside the flowers.
Carly says, SQUARE.
She adds the square to the path. Clyde adds another square stone.
Clyde says, SQUARE.
Cece adds a circle stone to the path.
Cece says, CIRCLE.
Clyde cheers, WHOO-HOO!
Carly and Cece cheer, YAY!
The three crab siblings glance at different-sized yellow and purple pinwheels.
Cece says, SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE.
She points to the different pinwheels and pulls them out of the ground. Cece carries the pinwheels over to the stone path and sticks them in the ground beside the square and circle stepping stones.
Cece says, SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE. SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE. SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE.
Clyde says, WE PRACTICED PATTERNS.
Carly says, AND WE'RE READY TO WIN THE GRAND PRIZE.
Clyde, Carly and Cece cheer, AT THE PATTERN FAIR! YAY!
[Circus music plays]
Outside the Treebourhood greenhouse, Zeke sits in a cardboard booth with Snout wearing matching hats and fake moustaches. A sign with red and blue jellybeans hangs on the booth. Zadie sits in another cardboard booth with a music note sign. Malik stands outside a third booth with a square, triangle and circle sign. Herbert sits in a cardboard box near a colourful arch. Zadie and Malik wear matching yellow hats.
Malik asks, EVERYTHING READY, ZADIE?
He adjusts his red bowtie. Zadie speaks through a rolled-up piece of paper.
She loudly says, YES! THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST PATTERNPALOOZA EVER!
Malik says, UH, I'M PRETTY SURE IT'S THE ONLY PATTERNPALOOZA EVER.
Zadie shrugs. Malik turns to Zeke.
Malik asks, ALL SET, ZEKE?
Zeke says, ALL SET! RED AND BLUE JELLYBEANS FOR MY COLOUR PATTERN GAME.
He points to a pattern of red and blue jellybeans laid out on a cardboard table.
Malik says, PERFECT, WE'RE READY TO OPEN THE FAIR.
He runs toward the colourful arch.
Zeke says, I LIKE THESE RED JELLYBEANS BEST. THEY'RE YUMMIEST.
He eats a red jellybean.
Zeke says, MM!
[Munching]
Zeke says, OOPS, I MESSED UP.
He eats a blue jellybean.
Zeke says, YUM, THERE, FIXED IT. BUT I LIKE THE RED ONES BETTER.
He eats another red jellybean.
Zeke says, MM.
He glances at Snout.
Zeke says, WHAT'S THAT, SNOUT?
[Snout squeaking]
Zeke says, I MESSED UP THE PATTERN AGAIN? I'LL FIX IT.
He eats a blue jellybean.
At the arch, Malik says, WELCOME TO THE PATTERNPALOOZA!
He stands on a box facing Clyde, Carly and Cece.
Malik says, WE HAVE THREE PATTERN GAMES FOR YOU TO PLAY, AND IF YOU WIN ALL THREE, YOU WIN THE GRAND PRIZE.
He follows Clyde, Carly and Cece through the arch. The crab siblings spot Herbert in the nearby box.
Malik says, HERBERT!
[Clyde, Carly and Cece gasping]
Clyde, Carly and Cece say, HERBERT!
Malik says, FIRST, YOU'LL NEED TO SOLVE THE SHAPE PATTERN.
Zadie unrolls a poster over the shape booth with three identical lines of circles, triangles, squares and rectangles, and a fourth different line.
Malik says, SOMETHING IN THIS SHAPE PATTERN IS OUT OF ORDER. FIX IT AND YOU WIN A PRIZE.
Cece takes a pointer stick from Malik and points to the first line of shapes.
Clyde, Carly and Cece say, CIRCLE, TRIANGLE, SQUARE, RECTANGLE.
Cece points to the second line of shapes.
Clyde, Carly and Cece say, CIRCLE, TRIANGLE, SQUARE, RECTANGLE.
Cece points to the third line.
Clyde, Carly and Cece say, CIRCLE, TRIANGLE, SQUARE, RECTANGLE.
Cece points to the fourth line.
Clyde, Carly and Cece say, CIRCLE, TRIANGLE, RECTANGLE, SQUARE. HUH?
They frown.
Clyde says, THE LAST ROW IS CIRCLE, TRIANGLE, RECTANGLE, SQUARE.
Cece says, THAT'S NOT RIGHT.
Carly walks up to the poster and swaps the square and rectangle in the fourth line.
Carly says, IT SHOULD BE CIRCLE, TRIANGLE, SQUARE, RECTANGLE.
Malik says, YOU WORKED OUT THE PATTERN AND FIXED IT!
He pulls prizes out from inside the music note booth.
Malik says, PICK A PRIZE, FOLKS. HIPPITY HOOP, STICKER MONSTER STICKERS, BUCKET OF SAND?
Clyde, Carly and Cece say, BUCKET OF SAND!? YAY!
Malik gives Clyde, Carly and Cece the bucket of sand.
Cece says, AW, SAND!
Carly and Clyde stick their claws in the sand.
Carly says, SO SOFT.
Sand falls through her claw.
Carly says, SEE HOW IT SLIPS THROUGH MY CLAW?
Clyde smells a claw-full of sand.
[Sniffing]
Clyde says, SMELLS LIKE QUALITY BEACH SAND.
Cece says, LET'S MAKE A SAND CASTLE!
Malik walks around the music note booth with the shape poster and other prizes.
Zadie says, OR YOU COULD WORK OUT THE NEXT PATTERN AT MY BOOTH, AND BE CLOSER TO WINNING HERBERT.
[Clyde, Carly and Cece gasping]
Clyde, Carly and Cece say, HERBERT!
Zadie steps into the music note booth.
She says, THIS IS A PATTERN YOU CAN HEAR. CLOSE YOUR EYES AND LISTEN.
Clyde, Carly and Cece close their eyes.,
Zadie adds, NO PEEKING!
She blows a kazoo.
[Blowing]
Zadie honks the horn.
[Honking]
Zadie blows a slide whistle.
[Whistling]
Zadie repeats her pattern with the kazoo, horn and slide whistle.
[Blowing, Honking, Whistling]
[Blowing, Honking, Whistling]
Zadie puts away the kazoo, horn and slide whistle.
She says, OKAY, YOU CAN OPEN YOUR EYES.
Clyde, Carly and Cece open their eyes.
Zadie says, TO WIN THIS PATTERN GAME, YOU HAVE TO GUESS THE SOUND THAT COMES NEXT.
She pulls out a board with a xylophone, drum, horn, slide whistle, cymbals, bell and kazoo and offers to Clyde, Carly and Cece. Clyde grabs and blows the kazoo.
[Blowing]
Clyde says, A KAZOO! THAT'S THE FIRST SOUND, I THINK, BUT WHAT IS THE SECOND SOUND IN THE PATTERN?
Cece grabs the bell. Clyde blows the kazoo.
[Blowing]
Cece rings the bell.
[Jingling]
Zadie shakes her head and says, NOPEREE.
Clyde blows the kazoo.
[Blowing]
Cece bashes the cymbals together.
[Cymbals crashing]
Zadie says, NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Clyde blows the kazoo.
[Blowing]
Carly honks the horn.
[Honking]
Zadie says, YEAH!
Carly says, KAZOO, HORN.
Cece says, WE NEED ONE MORE.
Clyde blows the kazoo.
[Blowing]
Carly honks the horn.
[Honking]
Cece plays the drum.
[Drum rattling]
Zadie shakes her head and says, NO.
Clyde blows the kazoo.
[Blowing]
Carly honks the horn.
[Honking]
Cece plays the xylophone.
Zadie shakes her head and says, UH-UH.
Clyde blows the kazoo.
[Blowing]
Carly honks the horn.
[Honking]
Cece blows into the slide whistle.
[Whistling]
Cece says, SLIDE WHISTLE!
Zadie says, PERFECT! YOU WORKED OUT THE PATTERN!
Malik says, YOU WIN!
He grabs prizes from inside the booth.
Malik says, PICK A PRIZE. POGO STICK, UNICORN FLOATIE, BUCKET OF SAND?
Clyde, Carly and Cece say, BUCKET OF SAND!
Clyde grabs the bucket of sand and runs over to Zeke’s booth with Carly and Cece. Malik and Zadie follow.
Malik says, I DON'T SEE ANYTHING.
[Malik chuckling awkwardly]
Malik says, THERE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A COLOUR PATTERN GAME.
He whispers to Zeke, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE JELLYBEANS, ZEKE?
With his mouth full, Zeke says, MM, SNOUT MIGHT HAVE ACCIDENTALLY EATEN THEM.
Malik says, UH...
Zeke says, BUT WE DON'T NEED JELLYBEANS, BECAUSE, UH, BECAUSE THIS GAME OF PATTERNS IS... IS, UH...
He looks around the booth.
Zeke says, IT'S A GAME THAT YOU HAVE TO MAKE UP YOUR OWN PATTERN!
Malik says, YES, MM-HM, THAT'S RIGHT. IT'S A MAKE-YOUR-OWN-PATTERN GAME, AND IT CAN BE ANYTHING YOU WANT, AND REMEMBER, YOU'RE PLAYING FOR THE GRAND PRIZE.
Malik looks toward the arch.
He says, HERBERT.
Clyde, Carly and Cece say, HERBERT!
They run toward the giant stuffed monster. Zeke leaves his booth.
Malik says, WAY TO WORK IT OUT, ZEKE.
He hugs Zeke.
Clyde says, HM, WHAT PATTERN CAN WE MAKE UP?
[Funky, upbeat music plays]
Nearby, Mr. E sings, BOUNCE, STEP, KICK, AND SCISSOR, HAPPY FEET.
He dances.
Mr. E sings, BOUNCE, STEP, KICK, AND SCISSOR, HAPPY FEET BOUNCE, STEP, KICK, AND SCISSOR, HAPPY FEET.
Clyde, Carly and Cece smile
Cece says, THAT'S IT! LET'S MAKE UP A MOVEMENT PATTERN, LIKE MR. E!
Clyde, Carly and Cece huddle together.
[Clyde, Carly and Cece whispering]
Clyde, Carly and Cece stand outside the music booth with Zadie, Zeke and Malik, and a speaker.
Clyde says, WE CAME UP WITH A PATTERN!
He plays music on the speaker.
[Upbeat music plays]
Clyde, Carly and Cece say, FLIP, FLOP, FLIPPITY-FLIP.
They flip around on their claws.
Clyde, Carly and Cece say, FLIP, FLOP, FLIPPITY-FLIP. FLIP, FLOP, FLIPPITY-FLIP. FLIP, FLOP, FLIPPITY-FLIP.
Malik says, HM, LET'S SEE. UH, FLOP, FLIP?
He flips onto one paw.
Carly says, NOPE.
Cece shakes her head.
Zadie says, ACTUALLY, IT'S FLIP, FLOP.
She flips onto her head.
Zeke says, AND THEN YOU DO FLIPPIT- FLIP.
He, Malik and Zadie flip onto their paws.
Zeke, Malik and Zadie say, FLIP, FLOP, FLIPPITY-FLIP. FLIP, FLOP, FLIPPITY-FLIP.
They flip around on their paws.
Cece cheers, YAY!
Clyde says, THAT'S THE PATTERN!
Malik says, WELL, SINCE YOU CREATED THE BEST PATTERN EVER AND WON ALL THREE PATTERN GAMES, YOU WIN THE GRAND PRIZE, HERBERT!
Clyde, Carly and Cece scurry over to the giant monster.
They cheer, HERBERT!
At their sandcastle home, Clyde says, LOOK WHAT WE WON AT THE PATTERN FAIR!
On their couch, Kit and Kat lower their books and look at Herbert.
[Kit and Kat yelping]
Kit and Kat jump out of their seats.
[Clyde, Carly and Cece laughing]
[Cheerful music plays]

[Mr. E panting]
Mr. E bumps into two stacked crates and falls. Zeke helps Mr. E sit up and Zadie races past. Mr. E jumps to his feet and continues through the maze. Zeke follows.
Mr. E weaves backward through the orange cones of fire. Zeke follows close behind.
Grandma Super dances.
She sings, LOTS OF THINGS HAVE PATTERNS, PATTERNS CAN BE NEAT. PATTERNS HAVE AN ORDER. AN ORDER THAT REPEATS.
[‘That repeats’ echoing]
Grandma Super sings, BLUE, RED, BLUE, RED, BLUE, RED.
Blue and red stripes appear. Grandma Super pushes them away.
Grandma Super sings, BIKE, SLED, BIKE, SLED, BIKE, SLED!
Zadie rides a bike, and Zeke rides a sled.
Grandma Super sings, DO YOU SEE THE PATTERN AND THE ORDER THAT REPEATS? PATTERNS HAPPEN ALL THE TIME AND ISN'T THAT JUST NEAT?
Zadie stands between Malik and Zeke.
Malik sings, PATTERNS, PATTERNS, PATTERNS.
Zadie sings, HAVE AN ORDER THAT REPEATS.
Zeke sings, LOTS OF THINGS HAVE PATTERNS.
Malik, Zadie and Zeke sing, AND WE THINK THAT IS NEAT!
Grandma Super sings, CIRCLE, CIRCLE, SQUARE. CIRCLE, CIRCLE, SQUARE. CIRCLE, CIRCLE, SQUARE.
Red circles and blue squares appear in a pattern of Circle, Circle, Square.
Grandma Super sings, CAN YOU SEE THE PATTERN THERE? NOT CIRCLE, SQUARE, SQUARE OR SQUARE, CIRCLE, CIRCLE.
A different pattern of Circle, Square, Square, Square, Circle, Circle replaces the first.
Grandma Super sings, LOOK AND SEE THE PATTERN IT'S CIRCLE, CIRCLE, SQUARE.
She points to the Circle, Circle, Square pattern.
Malik, Zadie and Zeke sing, AND WE THINK THAT IS NEAT. BOO!
[Circus music plays]
Zadie reads the episode title card.
She says, PATTERNPALOOZA.
Text reads, “Written by Deanna Oliver. Directed by Jeff Barker, Andrea Grestmann.”
[Gentle music plays]
At Mr. E’s Everything Emporium, Malik stands on a stool. He frowns at shelves of comic books. Malik pulls a comic book with a superhero koala bear off a shelf and flips through the pages.
Cece pushes the comic books aside.
Carly says, IT'S CALLED GUESS WHAT COMES NEXT.
[Playful music plays]
Clyde, Carly and Cece sing, POP-POP-POPCORN! POP-POP-POPCORN! POP-POP-POPCORN!
They jump around in front of Malik.
Malik says, I KNOW WHAT COMES NEXT!
Mr. E says, SO DO I!
He joins Malik and they both jump around.
They sing, POP-POP-POPCORN!
Clyde, Carly and Cece frown.
Mr. E says, I'M GLAD YOU ASKED!
He grabs a mini record player.
[Mr. E chuckling]
Mr. E says, HIT IT!
He drops the record player needle on a record.
[Record scratching]
[Beat box music plays]
Mr. E raps, A PATTERN IS SOMETHING THAT REPEATS, REPEATS, REPEATS. OVER AND OVER AGAIN. FIGURE OUT WHAT'S REPEATING, YOU CAN GUESS, GUESS, GUESS, WHAT. COMES. NEXT.
He throws the record player on the stool and strikes a pose with his arms crossed.
[Music ends]
Clyde, Carly and Cece stare at Mr. E.
Clyde, Carly and Cece close their eyes.
Malik says, GUESS WHAT COMES NEXT IN THE PATTERN I’M MAKING.
He taps a wooden spoon against the pot.
[Clanking]
Malik rings a bell.
[Jingling]
Malik honks a horn.
[Honking]
Malik makes a pattern with the pot, bell, and horn.
[Clanking, Jingling, Honking]
[Clanking, Jingling, Honking]
Carly and Cece say, WOW.
Clyde says, NICE.
Clyde taps the pot with the wooden spoon.
[Clanking]
Cece rings the bell.
[Jingling]
Carly honks the horn.
[Honking]
Malik says, YOU GUESSED IT.
Clyde says, LOOK AT US, WE DO PATTERNS!
[Carly and Cece cheering]
Carly says, SO, THE GAME WE MADE UP IS A PATTERN GAME.
Mr. E returns with the stool and record player.
He says, I'VE GOT A PATTERN YOU CAN SEE, HEAR, AND DO!
Mr. E starts the record player.
[Record scratching]
[Funky music plays]
Mr. E sings, BOUNCE, STEP, KICK, AND SCISSOR, HAPPY FEET.
He dances.
Mr. E sings, BOUNCE, STEP, KICK, AND SCISSOR, HAPPY FEET.
Clyde, Carly and Cece copy Mr. E’s moves.
Mr. E sings, BOUNCE, STEP, KICK, AND SCISSOR, HAPPY FEET. NOW FIGURE OUT THE PATTERN AND FOLLOW ME!
[Blowing]
